Vancouver Winter Olympics raises environmental bar for London 2012
Real time, online energy tracker demonstrates 20 per cent energy savings for Vancouver’s Olympics
The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) set out to make the Games the greenest ever – setting a marker for London 2012 and using new technology to monitor venue energy consumption.
Working with VANOC, Vancouver-based Pulse Energy has developed the Venue Energy Tracker to monitor energy consumption for key Olympic venues (http://www.venueenergytracker.com/) for the first time in the history of the Games. The tracker shows real-time energy consumption and energy savings achieved through sustainable building design features and operating practices.
The results have been fantastic. Over the first 3 days of the games, the Venue Energy Tracker has shown a savings of over 66,000 kilowatt hours, which equates to roughly a 20 percent reduction in energy consumption through sustainable practices. Highlights include a 64 per cent savings at the Athletes Village Community Centre, a City of Vancouver building located in the Southeast False Creek neighbourhood that was recently awarded LEED Platinum. The Olympics are on course to save approximately 18 gigawatt hours of electricity – enough to power more than 1,600 homes for an entire year.
“Cutting energy use and being sustainable is at the heart of plans for the London 2012 Olympics,” commented Pulse Energy CEO David Helliwell. “The current Vancouver Winter Olympics is demonstrating how energy consumption can be monitored and reduced by using smart technology. We’re already seeing the results and hope that similar technology can help London 2012 achieve its targets.”
Each participating Olympic site has a dashboard displaying real-time energy consumption that will help venue managers make smarter choices about how and when to use electricity. This data is made available to the public via the internet to provide unprecedented access to information that was unavailable for previous Games.
Olympic venues participating in the project include the Richmond Olympic Oval, Canada Hockey Place, The Vancouver Olympic/Paralympic Centre, Southeast False Creek Community Centre, Whistler Blackcomb Roundhouse Lodge and Snowmaking Facilities and the Athletes Villages in Vancouver and Whistler.
