The Team

The Pulse Energy team is growing fast, and we’re always looking to find new colleagues who have done extraordinary things and still have their most impressive achievements to come. By bringing together a rare combination of clean technology, a large and growing market that is changing quickly, and the potential for energy savings of up to 25% at a relatively low cost, Pulse Energy has been able to attract industry leaders from around the world. People on our team are drawn to the fact that the very nature of Pulse Energy’s business – saving energy – contributes to making the world a better place. We’re bringing experienced experts together with energetic and creative graduates to work in small, focused teams that are continually evolving. We have a minimal amount of hierarchy, and the primary job for management is to remove the barriers preventing the team from getting things done.

Pulse Energy is led by its co-founder, David Helliwell, whose career has spanned 3 continents and has been focused on the energy sector since 1994. David has been an exploration geophysicist, a poorly-paid professional windsurfing racer, a Paris-based management consultant to large multinational organizations and has spent three years running the policy shop for a cabinet minister in the Canadian federal government. While with the Canadian government, David was responsible for reducing costs and improving environmental performance of 700 million square feet of office space across the country. David is an Action Canada Fellow, a member of the BC Cleantech CEO Alliance, and is on the Imagine BC advisory board.

Software operations are led by Chuck Clark. Most recently Chief Software Architect at Orbitz.com, he was responsible for the world’s #2 travel reservations website, with 80 million customers and 70,000 concurrent users. Before joining Pulse Energy, Chuck rode his mountain bike from Mexico to Banff, off-road.

Rob Scott oversees the sales function and has joined the team from SAP, where he ran a North American sales team of 300 people, and built a robust sales process while also developing industry-leading partnership programs.

Doris Tang coordinates the technical and deployment efforts of the engineering team at Pulse Energy. Her experience spans a variety of industries, including the implementation of leading fuel cell applications technology across North America. Doris is an active member of Engineers Without Borders (Canada) and was President of the Vancouver Professional Chapter for two years.

Steve Jones is responsible for product management at Pulse Energy. Steve’s varied experiences include leading a team entered in the NASA Beam Power (Space Elevator) Challenge, participating in the DARPA Grand Challenge as the hardware group leader of the UBC team, and In 2007, he won the BC Hydro Innovation Challenge for a proposal to bring new energy efficient technologies to BC for testing. Steve is a past Canadian paper airplane champion.

Bruce Cullen is Pulse Energy’s resident energy efficiency expert, and is responsible for work in remote and first nations communities. In the 1990s Bruce led and co-founded Cullen Energy, which delivered over 90,000 home energy efficiency retrofits in Western Canada. Bruce played on the Dartmouth University varsity hockey team, and now tries to keep up to his wife and three children, who all play on hockey teams in Vancouver.
